SCENE 1: THE RESCUE

INT. CHEN’S APARTMENT – DAY

[SOUND EFFECT: A deafening crash as the heavy metal door finally gives way.]

The door bursts open. A thick cloud of gray smoke and the acrid smell of burning plastic pour out into the hallway.

CHEN rushes into the pitch-black apartment, ignoring the smoke. The neighbors follow closely, shining their phone flashlights through the darkness.

CHEN (Voice cracking, screaming) Guoguo! Where are you? Answer me! Guoguo!

The apartment is a mess. In the corner of the kitchen, huddled under the dining table, is a tiny silhouette. GUOGUO is curled into a ball, covering her ears, trembling violently, and crying silently. Nearby, a water spill has reached an old electrical outlet, causing it to spark dangerously.

Chen lunges forward and drops to his knees. He pulls his daughter into his arms, holding her tightly.

CHEN (Sobbing) I’m here! Daddy’s here! You’re safe now, I’ve got you!

Guoguo clings to her father’s shirt, finally letting out a loud, terrified wail. A neighbor quickly runs over to the breaker box and shuts off the main power, stopping the sparks.

SCENE 2: THE CONFRONTATION

EXT. APARTMENT HALLWAY – MOMENTS LATER

Chen carries Guoguo out into the hallway. Both of their faces are covered in soot and sweat. The neighbors surround them, offering wet towels and bottles of water.

From the stairwell, GRANDMA hurriedly walks up, clutching her small purse. Seeing the crowd and the destroyed door, she freezes. She looks guilty but quickly puts on a defensive, innocent face.

GRANDMA (Loudly, faking shock) Oh my goodness! What happened here? Was there a fire? I only stepped out for a second to buy some groceries!

Chen slowly turns to face his mother. His eyes are cold. There is no respect left, only absolute fury and profound disappointment.

CHEN (Low, trembling voice) Groceries? You locked a six-year-old child inside a dark house with three heavy-duty padlocks just to buy groceries? Or was the mahjong game at the end of the street just too good to leave?

GRANDMA (Stuttering, stepping back) How… how dare you speak to your mother like that! I…

A NEIGHBOR (Interrupting, pointing a finger at her) Cut the act! We called you at the mahjong parlor and you yelled at us for interrupting your winning streak! If Chen hadn’t risked his life rushing down from that high-voltage tower, your granddaughter would have suffocated in there!

The crowd erupts into angry whispers and scolding. Grandma is left speechless. She stares at Guoguo, who buries her face into her father’s shoulder. Grandma lowers her head, unable to defend herself. Chen tightens his grip on his daughter and walks straight toward the stairs, refusing to look at his mother again.

SCENE 3: CONSEQUENCES

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – NIGHT

The room is quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor.

Guoguo is fast asleep in the hospital bed, an IV drip attached to her small hand. The doctor finishes checking her vitals, gives Chen a reassuring pat on the shoulder, and exits the room.

Chen sits exhaustedly beside the bed, holding his daughter’s hand against his forehead.

Out in the hallway, Grandma slowly approaches the room. She is holding a thermos of hot soup. She nervously peeks through the glass window on the door, her eyes finally filled with genuine, bitter regret.

Chen looks up and catches her gaze through the glass. He stands up slowly. Without uttering a single word, he reaches out and pulls the window blinds shut, completely blocking her out.

In the hallway, Grandma stands frozen as the blinds snap closed. Tears stream down her face. She slowly slides down the wall, sitting on the cold floor, clutching the thermos and crying in isolation.

SCENE 4: A NEW LIGHT

EXT. CITY STREET – ONE MONTH LATER (ENDING SCENE)

[MUSIC CUE: Uplifting, warm, and hopeful acoustic music.]

The sun is setting, casting a warm golden glow over the city. Chen, dressed in his clean lineman uniform, is walking down a bustling street, holding Guoguo’s hand. She is wearing a brand-new kindergarten backpack and holding a giant cotton candy, beaming with joy.

GUOGUO (Looking up at her dad) Daddy, the new kindergarten has so many toys. And the teacher is so nice!

CHEN (Smiling warmly, patting her head) I’m glad you like it. From now on, Daddy will pick you up every single day after work. We aren’t going to live with Grandma anymore. It’s just you and me now, okay?

GUOGUO (Nodding enthusiastically) Okay! I promise I’ll be good and I won’t spill water near the plugs ever again.

CHEN (Laughing, lifting her onto his shoulders) You are the best girl in the world! Come on, let’s go to our new home!

The silhouettes of the father and daughter stretch long across the pavement. In the distance, towering high-voltage electrical towers stand tall against the sunset—no longer a symbol of dangerous separation, but a reminder of a father’s enduring light and protection for his child.
